Knowledge Exchange Forum (12) : Language Development and Silent Period of Preschoolers and Students

The silent period is an important period in language learning. The learners are unwilling to speak and reluctant to participate in class activities, especially during the process of school transitions such as preschool-kindergarten, kindergarten-primary school, and primary school-secondary school. Many teachers are unfamiliar with this phenomenon, misunderstanding them as weak learners, or even wrongly recognised them as students with special educational needs (SEN).

As the principal investigator of C-for-Chinese@JC Joyful Learning for Inclusive Community, Prof. TSE Shek Kam specialises in the characteristics and reasons of the silent period, and provides strategies for support. Prof. Tse briefly introduced the notion of the silent period in the previous knowledge exchange forum, Developing an All-Round Mother Tongue Learning Environment. In the upcoming forum, Prof. Tse would combine language development and medium of instruction to elaborate more on the silent period, which is referential to teachers and parents.
