The CACLER has collaborated with 10 academic units from Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan Japan and China to co-host the 9th International Conference on Han Characters Education and Research (第九屆〝漢字與漢字教育〞國際研討會) at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 19-21 January 2019. The keynote speech entitled “漢字文化圈語言第二語言教學的本體與漢字應有的地位” was delivered by Prof. Joël M. Bellassen (白樂桑教授), the President of the European Association for Chinese Teaching; former Professor of Chinese at Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, France. Another keynote speech entitled “在越南的漢字與漢字教育” was delivered by Prof. Van Khang NGUYEN (阮文康教授), the President of Linguistics Society of Vietnam. The Conference provides a platform bringing together scholars, researchers and practitioners from different countries to discuss and share their ideas, perspectives, experiences and research insights into how variations of Han characters feature and are taught in a number of Asian languages, such as Korean, Japanese, Mainland Chinese, Singaporean, Taiwanese and Vietnamese. The Conference has attracted 120 education researchers and frontline teachers from Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Sweden and Hong Kong, and around 90 presentations have been conducted. Six paper presentations are presented by scholars and research students from HKU. The next conference will be held in February 2020 in Poland.

The Conference was reported by one Vietnam newspaper (Saigon Giai Phong Online) on 20/1/2019.
